Sports stars turn luxury car thieves, held

PATIALA: Three national-level sportsmen and son of a police officer from Ludhiana have been arrested for stealing swanky cars and robberies. Police claimed the three had formed a gang, called Fortuner, and stole expensive cars and SUVs. The three sportsmen have been identified by cops as kabaddi player Gurjinder Singh, javelin gold medallist Pawan Kumar, shot putter Atinder Vikranjit Singh.

Though selected, Gurjinder is yet to join Punjab police. Pawan participated at the Asia-level camp in javelin and has won gold medals in national events. He quit his job in BSF three years back. Atinder is a
student of Punjabi University, Patiala, and has represented India in shot put, while Mandeep Pistoli is the son of a head constable from Ludhiana.

Police said the gang was headed by computer engineer Jatinder Kumar, a national-level hammer thrower, who along with his aides Sukhdev Billa and Suraj Parkash are still on the run.

The gang had stolen Fortuner, Honda, Swift and other vehicles from various parts of the state, the police said adding they have recovered a Safari and two other cars. During investigations, it has come to light that the gang members loved driving cars at high speed and had a passion for SUVs.

"We have found their involvement in 11 cases of robberies/vehicle theft worth Rs 1.09 crore. They mainly stole SUV and luxury cars so that they could speed away from the crime scene," said a senior police officer.
