Ghost City among top 10 iPhone games

KOCHI: Ghost City, a mobile game created by a group of youngsters from Kochi, is currently among the top ten mobile applications listed in Apple iPhone's download segment. The game has been played by over one million people across the world, with US and India on top.

"We have proved that Malayalis are competent enough to take on IT bigwigs in California or New York," said Gokul Elayadath, managing partner of Kochi-based Ether IT Solutions. Other members of the core team that developed this application are Sharath Mohan, K R Sujesh, Nikhil Jain, Basil T Paul, S Sreekanth, Jiffin Francis, P M Akhil, B Brijitha, U Sruthy, M V Sona and C A Sreeja and their day jobs range from banking to marketing.

The game is about a ghost going around the city breaking lights. He hates light and loves darkness and is on a mission to break all the lights in the city. There are 48 levels in the game and the player should overcome all the obstacles and succeed in breaking the lights from living rooms, roads, traffic signals, parking lot, along the sea shore and in underground tunnels.

The idea to develop the game struck when the team members sat through a brainstorming session discussing various fun moments they had in their childhood.

"Children love breaking bulbs and tubes. Given a chance they pelt stones at streetlights. Sometimes, even grownups enjoy breaking bulbs," said Sharath Mohan.

Games are generally classified into two categories - pure game and casual game, the former for pros and the latter for casual gamers. Anyone can upload a game in the App Store. What you need is to get a developer licence which will cost around $ 99.

The success of the game depends upon the number of downloads and the ratings given by users. Ghost City's main competitors are Temple Run, Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds. Gokul revealed that they will soon be launching an upgraded version of Ghost City and it will be introduced in Android also.
