Play video games and lose weight

It doesn't get better than this - According to scientists at Brigham Young University and the University of Massachusetts, your kids (and you!) can get fit if left alone with video games.

Could attaining fitness be this easy? Seems like a pure win-win situation for kids and parents? But here's the hitch - this doesn't apply to all video games. Only video games that require physical involvement (no, moving your thumb at whatever speed is not considered exercise) ensure fitness.

The key words here are 'moderate to vigorous physical activity while playing video games.' The recent report stated that video games that involve moderate to vigorous movement can even better a child's fitness prospects far more than walking on a treadmill can.

This ties in well with your role as a parent, as you can select the appropriate video games, which your child will enjoy while getting fit at the same time. Select games that have the right levels of energy expenditure, which will have a direct and constructive impact on your child's body weight and composition.

Just a few minutes on games like Wii Boxing, in particular, equal to a 10 minute brisk walk on the treadmill. Other than this, the other games researched were Dance Dance Revolution, Cybex Trazer Goalie Wars, LightSpace Bug Invasion, Sportwall and Xavix J-Mat.

Taking video games exercising to the next level: Gaming consoles/devices are already encouraging weight consciousness into gaming, with examples like the Mii avatars that have facial features and a body type which you can customise. Games like Dance Dance Revolution offer entertainment along with fun and play. This strenuous exercise can get your heart beat up in seconds and if adjusted to the right intensity, it has the capability to replace your real gym cardio workouts.

Other games to look out for are Nicktoons Movin's, a fun way of beating virtual robots to death while burning calories, and Golf Launchpad - an exergame where you get to play in the most challenging golf courses of the world. You can also try out Ubisoft Just Dance 2, and Ubisoft Your Shape Fitness Evolved.
